ICAR Research Complex for Goa was established in April, 1976 as a regional centre under ICAR Research Complex for Northeast Hill region, Shillong, Meghalaya. Subsequently it became the regional centre under CPCRI, Kasargod. The institute has major on-going programs in research on coconut and arecanut based cropping systems, management of insect pests of coconut etc. The centre is located in North Goa District of the Goa state.

Coconut is cultivated in Goa in an area of 25, 730 ha with a production of 129.28 million nuts/year. Coconut palms form an important component of Goan agriculture. Nadora Tall, Calangute Tall, Benaulim (Banawali) Tall are the common local cultivars of coconut of Goa state known by the location. Banawali Green round is a high yielding coconut cultivar and released for commercial cultivation as “Pratap” by KKV Dapoli. Goa Benaulim Paniis a recent selection for tender coconut from the Goa centre and is being multiplied. Arecanut is cultivated in Goa in an area of 1728 ha with a production of 2867 tonnes/year. About 25 % of arecanut is cultivated as intercrop in coconut. Pine apple, black pepper and tree spices mostly grown as intercrops in coconut/arecanut gardens.

The South-West monsoon records a total annual rainfall of around 3000 mm. The place experiences a maximum and minimum mean tempera¬tures of 33°C and 21 °C, respectively. The relative humidity varies between 76 to 86 per cent. It has an undulating terrain with diverse soil conditions for cultivation of horticultural and plantation crops.
