Significant achievements | Developed four varieties and one hybrid in coconut for cultivationGERMPLASM COLLECTION, CONSERVATION AND EVALUATIONCOCONUT: (At Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kidu, Karnataka) As the Scientist-in-charge of International Coconut Gene Bank for South Asia, strengthened the coconut field genebank to accommodate 116 accessions. I have attended three months training on Germplasm Collection and evaluation at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi. Explored two islands of Lakshadweep to study the coconut population and reported niu vai type of coconut from Lakshadweep for the first time. Following this study, re-described laccadive ordinary cultivar and identified three distinct types in Laccadive ordinary cultivar. Participatory characterization of farmer varieties in coconut was carried out at Pallikkera in Kerala and Ariyankuppam in Tamil Nadu and identified twelve farmer varieties. Sweet kernel coconut was identified and collected for the first time from India. A hypothesis on the origin of laccadive micro, a coconut cultivar from Lakshadweep islands was developed. A novel method for characterization of local coconut genetic resources was developed.RICE: (At Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Orissa) Collected wild species of Oryza from western and southern Orissa. Explored super cyclone (1999) affected areas of Balasore, Badrak, Jagatsingpur and Cuttack districts in Orissa and collected valuable land races of cultivated rice. Explored and collected land races of Boro rice from Assam.SPICES: (At Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikkode, Kerala) Collected and conserved endangered species like Vanilla aphylla, Piper barberi, P. schmidtii, and P. hapnium. Established in vitro gene bank to supplement the filed gene bank and to conserve species from various agroclimatic zones, especially the temperate spices. Prepared photodocuments and herbarium of the collected specimen.CROP IMPROVEMENT? Member of the team involved in the development and release of four varieties and one hybrid in coconut. ? Evaluation of seedling progenies of turmeric, two of which were released as new varieties Prabha and Pratibha? Exploiting somaclonal variation for crop improvement in ginger especially with regard to yield, resistance to rhizome rot, dry recovery and quality attributed? Identification of two high yielding rhizome rot resistant somaclones of gingerBIOTECHNOLOGY Member of the team responsible for establishing biotechnology facility at IISR (The team received ICAR team award, 1994-96 for their multidisciplinary research and outstanding contribution in the field of Horticultural Science Spices Biotechnology)? Micropropagation Developed protocols in ginger, cardamon, turmeric, black pepper, long pepper and cinnamon for large scale multiplication of clonal planting material of elite genotypes? Plant regeneration from callus Developed in ginger for generation of variability? Conversion of floral meristem in to vegetative buds Developed protocol in ginger for reducing contamination of cultures which is common when rhizomes are used as explants? Conversion of root meristem to shoot - Achieved in P. longum, P. colubrinum and P. Betle? Single flower culture and development of fruit For development of seeds in ginger as there is no natural seed set, since it can give rise to new source of variability? Field evaluation of tissue cultured plants - Evaluated more than thousand ginger plants and identified two promising lines? Anther culture and plant regeneration from anther derived callus Developed in ginger for possible isolation of haploids and dihaploids? Synthetic seed technology for germplasm conservation and exchange Developed in ginger? In vitro proliferation of mace Develped protocol for direct multiplication of nutmeg mace? Establishment and immobilisation of cell suspension cultures for possible production of secondary metabolite Established in ginger? Isolation and culture of protoplasts in cardamom and ginger for using protoplast system for genetic manipulation? Genetic transformation using biolistics Using Particle Delivery System obtained GUS expression in ginger and cardamom, as a run up for possible development of transgenics |
