General information
The ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (formerly Central Agricultural Research Institute) was established on June 23rd, 1978 by merging different regional research stations of ICAR institutes located in the islands to meet the growing food demands of local and tourists in the islands. Considering the importance of coconut and arecanut in island ecosystem, major portion of Institute’s Sippighatf arm is dedicated for research on these crops. The World Coconut Germplasm Centre hosting unique accessions of coconut from the Indian as well as other islands is being maintained at the farm. Recently, the Institute has released four varieties of coconut viz. CARI Annapurna, CARI- Omkar, CARI- Chandan and CARI- Surya,and a superior Arecanut selection CARI Samrudhifor Island conditions. The Institute has been included as voluntary centre in the AICRP on Palms which was approved during the XII EFC.
