Marginal   necrosis

Inflorescence necrosis

Causal organism : Phytoplasma

Symptoms

Yellowing of the outer whorl of leaves and marginal necrosis
Abnormal inward bending or ribbing of the leaf let’s (flaccidity)
Drying up of spathes and necrosis of spikelets from tip downward
Extensive rotting of roots, main roots and rootlets start drying from tip backwards.  The capacity of the palms to regenerate fresh roots is drastically reduced.
In the advanced stage the crown gets very much reduced in size and ceases to produce flower bunches.
The nuts from diseased palms have thinner husk and fibers are definitely weaker and less firm.

Disease Management

Removal of all disease advanced and uneconomic palms and   replanting with healthy elite seedlings.
Application of recommended dose of fertilizers and application of 50kg FYM/palm/year
Grow green manure crops in coconut basins, Sowing   during April- May (After fertilizer appln.) and incorporation during Sept-Oct (at the time of fertilizer application).
  Control of leaf rot disease.
  Irrigating palms during summer months
  Intercropping/mixed cropping
